Ponderings on Gratitude

Imagine two little children entering your house. They notice a bowl of sweets on the table. The first one runs right to it, grabs a whole lot, stuffs their face, and says, “More!” The other one looks at you and asks: “May I please have some?” and says, “Thank you.”

How does each child’s behaviour make you feel?

Which child would you be happy to offer more sweets to?

Gratitude sweetens things always.

However, I have a feeling all of us behave like one or the other child in different moments. It can be difficult to find gratitude for things which don't make us 'feel good'. But gratitude always sweetens, and smooths things. But how do you BE grateful for the things in life which aren't so sweet? The good news is, we don’t have to feel grateful to BE grateful. Each moment provides an opportunity to choose our attitude, and so our attitude could be one of gratitude!

When we communicate in the language of gratitude, we’re actively working with the universal flows. We know deep in our hearts that the Universe is an abundant place, so while we don't necessarily always get what we 'want', what is needed for our evolution will be provided. The Universe doesn’t look to satisfy our egoic wants and desires but to assist in growth and healing, in becoming the best version of ourselves, in actualising our potential. She’s infinitely intelligent, and tirelessly offers opportunities to overcome internal or external obstacles so we can grow wiser and stronger.

Everything and everyone around are the Universe providing a mirror so we can see the truth about ourselves. It can be confronting so we often judge and project at the mirror. Consider for a moment how it would be to internally say “Thank you. I might or might not be able to see the gifts of this situation right now, but I choose to be grateful regardless”?

It's worth remembering that life doesn’t owe us anything. Happiness is an illusionary goal. We don’t need to get it all perfect, we’re meant to have a go, learn, become wiser. We can be content and express our gratitude by contributing to the process of evolution.

 Myth busters...

Exploring a new paradigm of Coaching, Mentoring and Interpersonal Facilitation, what it is and what it isn’t, from the perspective of GCA heart based philosophy.

Myth: The most common faulty belief is you need a reason to be grateful: something needs to make you grateful.

Gratitude is incredibly powerful. A few squirts of gratitude onto the rusty tangles in our lives melts the rust of our judgements (how liberating!) and opens positive transformation to flow in our lives (yes please)! That's a powerful shift from a bit of gratitude. Imagine it in a steady stream!

So let's bust a myth about gratitude. The most common faulty belief is you need a reason to be grateful: something needs to make you grateful. But you don't need a reason! It's a feeling you can conjure any time. Just be grateful! Try it. You can plough right into gratitude even when you feel awful. And the results are awesome.

For example - something happens and I feel scared, frightened, tense and gripping on tight inside. I'm triggered and I'm in fear. If I act from this place I'm either going to attack, be overly defensive, freeze or try to please my way out of it and compromise myself Darn!

But here's how gratitude saves the day: I just flood with gratitude while I I feel the fear. I say to myself. “Thank you! Thank you, feelings!” The magic happens. The fears melt, the gripping tightness falls away. I feel an opening, softening, expansion as they melt away. No reason required.

But you can reach for a reason to help you - something that makes you grateful. Eg “I'm so grateful for the pussycat in my life!” and flood my heart with that gratitude.

Another fabulous method is to say to your fearful feelings: “Thank you! Thank you! You're doing your best to try to protect me! You're doing a great job, I feel those feelings so strongly! I'm so grateful! Thank you my faithful reactions! but I'm here now and you don't need to do that anymore. You can rest! Thank you, you can rest! Thank you.”  - all while flooding with the feeling of gratitude. It works quickly, effectively, to melt and transform the fear. Try it. The key is gratitude.

I love this approach too: “Thank you Universe, for showing me these feelings that were hidden inside! Thank you! I know you want me to grow. I know you're benevolent. Thank you for showing me – I can feel them now. So now I can bring transformation to them, to heal them. Thank you!” - while I flood with gratitude, I will begin to feel them melt.

Gratitude melts the judgements that lock into fear. It opens a flow of grace and transformation.

And isn't that what we're looking for really in life?

Who We Are and What We Do

If you have not yet studied with us, you may not already know that the Global Coaching Academy has been creating and delivering heart-based training programmes since 2004.

We began as a very small Registered Training Organisation in Perth offering a Certificate of Mentoring and Coaching. This was in response to people who were looking for a meaningful course and qualification that wasn't all about 'rah rah' and money making, rather about wanting to make a difference and support others to become the best versions of themselves. 17 years later, GCA is delivering a Diploma of Mentoring, Coaching and Interpersonal Facilitation, as a fully internationally recognised ICF accredited coach training program to participants in United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, Asia and New Zealand.
